Portorož Airport offers its users a unique experience, as it is surrounded by the Sečovlje Saltpans natural park, one of the last salt flats in the Mediterranean, where salt is extracted by hand using a centuries-old method. It is a small airport that offers security and privacy to its visitors. In 2022, the airport celebrated its 60th anniversary, and it wants to enter the future as a green and digitized airport.
When designing, we took into account the facts highlighted above; local characteristics and location advantages, sustainable design and use of natural materials, and a comfortable and personal experience that larger airports cannot provide.
The airport includes a reception area with a waiting room, a bar and a restaurant, a VIP room, departures and arrivals and all the necessary service areas. The shell of the terminal is completely glazed, which allows a lot of natural light to enter the interior and connects the visitor with the outside. Through the large glazed interior surfaces, a view of the airport runway is possible from the entrance hall, either through departures or arrivals.
The floors and central walls are designed in a pattern that imitates the grid of the salt fields. A wooden ceiling is suspended between the ribs of the concrete wooden structure, in which lighting, ventilation, acoustic panels and other technical installations have been placed. Just like the floor and wall coverings, the profiles of the windows and doors, as well as the colors of the selected elements, follow the color palette of the nearby salt pans. The fixed equipment is clad in local stone, and greenery is brought into the room either through a large green wall in the restaurant or with trees planted in movable pots.
